Creamer Shoots 60
At a golf course that tends to yield low scores, Paula Creamer certainly shot one yesterday in the opening round of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. The 21-year-old birdied nine of the last 11 holes, including the final three, en route to a course-record 11-under-par 60 on the Highland Meadows layout in Sylvania, Ohio.
Creamer holds a five-stroke lead in the tournament. The round was her best of the year by six strokes and broke Se Ri Pak's course mark by a shot.
Only after she finished did Creamer realize how close she came to carding a magical 59. Annika Sorenstam set that LPGA record in the second round of the 2001 Standard Register PING tournament on a par-72 course.
"I didn't know it was a par 71," Creamer said with a laugh. "I thought it was a par 72. If I would have known that, who knows?"
In order to shoot a 59, Creamer would have needed to hole out from 137 yards on the final hole. Though that didn't happen, she rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for her 60.
"I haven't been really able to make too many putts in the past couple of weeks, but I guess I saved them all up for today," Creamer said. "I was always in the zone. It was only in the last couple of holes when I started to think about (the score)."
Creamer broke her previous all-time low round on the LPGA Tour by four shots. She also matched the Tour record for nine holes with a 27 on the front nine. "There were a couple of putts out there that went away," she said. "I missed one 5-footer straight up the hill at the 11th. There were definitely more birdies, but I'll take the 60."
In the midst of a great season with two wins and seven top-10s in 15 events, Creamer has the lead over Eun-Hee Ji and Gloria Park, who each shot 65.
The round was halted due to lightning with 21 players yet to finish their opening 18 holes.
