Couples Wins in a Rout; Perry Takes Charles Schwab Cup


Fred Couples cruised to a 2-under 69 on Sunday to win the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

The 54-year-old from Seattle, who entered Sunday with a five-stroke lead in the 30-player field, posted three birdies on the front nine, then came home with a bogey and eight pars to finish at 17-under 267, six strokes ahead of Germany's Bernhard Langer (67), Australia's Peter Senior (69) and Mark O'Meara (70).

The win was Couples' first on the over-50 circuit since the 2012 Senior Open Championship at Turnberry. He earned $440,000.

Sharing fifth at 274 were Mark Calcavecchia (65), Rocco Mediate (68), Kenny Perry (68) and Bart Bryant (70).

In closing with the day's lowest round, a 7-under 64, Fred Funk rose up the leaderboard into a share of ninth at 9-under 275 with Jay Don Blake (66) and defending champion Tom Lehman (71).

With his fifth-place finish, Perry - a three-time winner this year - won the season-long Charles Schwab Cup. The 53-year-old Kentuckian entered the tournament with a 612-point lead over second-place Langer in the points' race. He finished the season 412 points ahead of the World Golf Hall of Fame member.

By winning the 2013 Cup, Perry earned a $1 million annuity. Two of Perry's three wins came in majors - the Senior Players Championship and the U.S. Senior Open., bringing his total earnings on the season to $2.4 million.
