Coston Makes Pacific Northwest PGA history

Jeff Coston, former PGA Tour player and director of golf instruction at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine, Wash., was recently named both Pacific Northwest PGA Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year at the section’s annual awards ceremony October 24 at the Puyallup Fairground’s ShowPlex Exhibition Center. This marks the first time in the section’s history that an individual has earned both distinctions concurrently.

With a slew of victories and high-ranked completions this year in both the regular and senior divisions, Coston has maintained a strong lead in the running for both Player of the Year awards throughout the season. With nine previous Player of the Year titles to his credit, Coston decided to up the ante this year, his first season playing in the senior division.

“This achievement has been one of my goals since the beginning of the season,” Coston said. “I’ve always had a lot of respect for the game, and I’ve been really inspired by the people around me and by those who have played alongside me, pushing me to make goals and achieve them.”
The award recognition comes on the heels of another big victory for Coston, who won the 18th Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship October 19-22 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The national win secures a spot for Coston in next year’s Senior PGA Championship, scheduled for May 21-27 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina.
When he’s not playing the circuits, Coston spends his time sharing his expertise and technique to golf students at his home course at Semiahmoo. “I’ve always worked hard on my game – both playing and teaching,” Coston said. “I love to play, but I also really love to teach.”
Coston was recently invited to participate in a qualifier for the Champions Tour, but said he has decided not to pursue that avenue because it would require closing down his academy. “After a lot of consideration,” Coston said, “I’ve decided the cost is just too great. I’ve built a lot of great relationships up here through the academy, and sometimes you have to look beyond doing things for just yourself. I believe the relationships I have here with my students and the people I work with are more important.”
The Jeff Coston Golf Academy, which opened 12 years ago at Semiahmoo, attracts a variety of students with skill levels ranging from beginners to budding tour pros. In addition to one-on-one and group instruction, Coston offers clinics and is a popular motivational speaker for group and corporate events.
Located at Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Wash., Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club was designed by Arnold Palmer and is ranked the No. 3 public course in Washington by Golf Digest.
