Construction Underway on Moonlight Golf Course in Big Sky
Construction is continuing at The Reserve, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Mont. Despite a heavy snow year, the site is almost completely free of snow, allowing construction to resume.
“We could actually be playing it today, if it was finished,” said course superintendent Mike Wilcynski.
Wilcynski, who has extensive experience building and maintaining golf courses in Montana, said that the Moonlight course’s ability to shed snow is unusual in the northern Rocky Mountains. “The course primarily faces west, and mature vegetation is fairly sparse,” he said. “That opens the course to a lot of sunlight and great views. The result is that snow melts at the site very quickly. This course will most likely be playable from mid-May to mid-October each year.”
Wilcynski, who holds a degree in horticulture and agronomy from Montana State University in Bozeman, said earlier this spring that course construction is progressing on schedule. Sixteen of the course’s 18 holes have been cleared, most of the earthwork has been completed on the first six holes, two irrigation reservoirs have been completed and a custom sod blend for the fairways and roughs is currently being grown in northern Utah.
“We expect to start sodding the front nine in August, and we’ll also start construction on the clubhouse this summer. We should be playing some of the holes by late summer 2007,” he said.
The course and clubhouse are expected to open fully in 2008.
