Congressional to Host 2005 Booz Allen Classic
Nearly 80 percent of Congressional Country Club’s membership voted in early June 2004 to approve a request by the Booz Allen Classic and its host organization, Washington Golf Charities, to move the 2005 Booz Allen Classic down the road from the TPC at Avenel to Congressional, which hosted the PGA Tour event from 1980 through 1986. The 2005 relocation will allow the Tour to renovate Avenel.
“We’re thrilled that Congressional Country Club’s members enthusiastically supported our proposal to move the 2005 Booz Allen Classic to their club,” said Dr. Ralph W. Shrader, chairman and CEO of Booz Allen Hamilton, title sponsor of the Booz Allen Classic. “We’ll be playing on the course that hosted this tournament when it first moved to the Washington area in 1980 and remained the host venue until the move to Avenel in 1987.
“Everyone is well aware of Congressional’s tremendous history with the sport of golf as the host of the 1997 US Open,” Shrader said in a press release. “Having Congressional serve as host site of the Booz Allen Classic in 2005, the week prior to the 2005 US Open at Pinehurst, will be a great boost for our tournament.”
The 2004 Booz Allen Classic, to be played June 21 – 27, begins a new era for one of the area’s top professional sporting events and its title sponsor – Booz Allen Hamilton. Since moving to the Washington area in 1980, the tournament has distributed nearly $8 million to charities, half to local Washington area charities. Beginning with the 2004 Booz Allen Classic, the nonprofit Washington Golf Charities and Booz Allen Hamilton have set a fund-raising goal of $1 million annually, with 100 percent going to Washington-area charities, more than quadrupling any prior year’s charitable giving in the local community.
The 2004 Booz Allen Classic has a tournament -record $4.8 million purse, with the champion collecting an all-time high $864,000 for first place.
