Chambers Bay Update

The spectacular course now under construction in the University Place area near Tacoma, Wash., is moving forward nicely. Though four weeks behind schedule, according to a recent status report released by Pierce County, the 18-hole layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. should be open for play in spring 2007.

The project, budgeted for just over $20 million, is being built on a site that offers panoramic views of Puget Sound, neighboring islands, the Tacoma Narrows and Olympic Mountains.

As of November 2006, the following items have been addressed:
  • Shaping has been completed on all 18 golf holes and the practice range.
  • Irrigation installation work has started or been completed on all 18 golf holes and the practice range.
  • Sand-capping is completed on all 18 golf holes and practice range.
  • Seeding has been started or completed on 17 of the 18 holes.
  • The satellite maintenance facility is nearly complete, except for final electrical trim and some work on the exterior.
  • Installation of utility infrastructure is complete except for final electrical meters and backflow prevention equipment on the water system.
  • Starter, caddie and clubhouse buildings were delivered to the site and are now being assembled.

Chicago-based KemperSports Management is assisting the county in the development and will take over operations of the course when it opens next year. Over the next few months, the golf course will be allowed to grow in, the neighboring hiking trails and parking areas will be paved, the site will be fenced, and work will commence on the remaining buildings.
