Capstone Club to Open Soon
Construction is wrapping up on the Capstone Club of Alabama, which will open in late spring 2001. The course was built by Wadsworth Golf Course Construction Company – Southeast, and was designed by Gil Hanse. The course is open to University of Alabama alumni, faculty, staff, friends, students and, “everyone who loves the Crimson Tide.” The venue will also be home to ‘Bama’s men’s and women’s golf teams, who will have access to a 25-acre practice facility. Arnold Palmer Golf Management will operate the course.
Memberships in the private course are available to individuals, businesses, corporations, partnerships or professional organizations. Capstone members also enjoy playing privileges at all University Clubs of America (UCA) nationwide, including clubs at the University of South Carolina, Auburn University, the University of Louisville, and the University of Kentucky, as well as other clubs developed in the future.
After working with fellow Cornell University alum, Tom Doak, at noted courses like High Pointe and Stonewall, Hanse started Hanse Golf Course Design in 1993. With the 1998 opening of the 18-hole Craighead Golf Links for the Crail Golfing Society, Hanse became just the third American architect to build a course in Scotland. His other designs include Inniscrone Golf Club in Avondale, Pennsylvania (1999), Tallgrass Golf Club in Shoreham, New York (2000 opening), and South Fork Country Club in Amagansett, New York (new 9 opening 2000).
Robins and Morton are building the 23,000-square-foot clubhouse, designed by Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood. The clubhouse reflects the architecture of the Tuscaloosa campus, and will house locker rooms, a pro shop, and a grille. A “Hall of Heroes” will contain memorabilia from years of Crimson Tide history and tradition. Everything in this area will have the look and feel of the University of Alabama, from the official crimson and white colors to the Crimson Tide logo.
Besides the 18-hole championship golf course, practice area and clubhouse, the 700-acre project in Brookwood, Alabama includes a resort-style swimming pool and tennis courts. Homes will be developed on the club’s periphery. For membership details, contact the Capstone Club sales office at 205/469-4653 or toll-free at 877/3094653.
