Brede Wins Crop Science Society of America Awards

A. Douglas Brede, Ph.D., has received three awards from the Crop Science Society of America. He received the NCCPB Genetics and Plant Breeding Award for Industry; the Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award; and was named CSSA Fellow.

The Genetics and Plant Breeding Award is presented to a crop scientist who has made significant contributions in genetics and plant breeding during his/her career in the private sector. The Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award recognizes significant career contributions in turfgrass science during the most recent 15 years.

CSSA has been selecting outstanding members to the position of Fellow since 1985. Colleagues within the Societies nominate worthy members and they are ranked before final selection is made by the CSSA Executive Committee. The Society has chosen 10 individuals, based on their professional achievements and meritorious service, to receive this honor in 2005.

Brede, who has developed more than 60 popular turf varieties, including Nu Destiny Kentucky bluegrass and T-1 creeping bentgrass, is research director and one of three operating officers for Jacklin Seed by Simplot. His research team has developed, released and patented top cultivars in nine other grass species.

Before joining Jacklin, he was associate professor of turfgrass management at Oklahoma State University. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees at the Pennsylvania State University in turfgrass agronomy. Prior to graduate school, he managed a 27-hole golf course near Pittsburgh, Pa.
