BMW's First Round Canceled

The first round of the BMW Championship yesterday was canceled when storms dumped 3 inches of rain on Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. The third leg of the four-event FedEx Cup Playoffs will start anew today, with 36 holes slated for Saturday.

"We do know how to deal with adversity," said Jerry Ritter, the general chairman of the tournament and a Bellerive member. Ritter was referring to the club's star-crossed past.

Dozens of players were getting ready for the American Express Championship the morning of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Tiger Woods was set to play in St. Louis for the first time in his career, but the event was canceled. Three years later the U.S. Senior Open came to town, but rain washed out Friday's second round. At least that tournament was completed, with Peter Jacobsen hobbling around Bellerive on a bad hip and pulling off his first-ever major title.

The rain subsided yesterday afternoon to allow crews about 18 hours to re-prepare the course. Aiding their cause is a new drainage system that was recently installed.

"It's under water," said Slugger White, vice president of rules and competition for the PGA Tour. "It's as bad as I've seen in a long time."

Ritter said the tournament would honor Thursday tickets on the weekend, when the gallery is expected to top 35,000.

So today, Vijay Singh will resume his quest to win the first three FedEx Cup events; he won the initial Barclays in New Jersey and last week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston.
