Blake Wins Charles Schwab Championship; Lehman Earns Big Payday
Jay Don Blake closed with an even-par 71 to win the Charles Schwab Championship. The Champions Tour's season-ending tournament was held at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Starting the final round with a two-shot edge, Blake finished the 72-hole event at 8-under 276, two shots ahead of Mark Calcavecchia (69), Loren Roberts (70), Michael Allen (71) and Jay Haas (71) on another chilly late-fall day in the Bay Area.
Blake carded three birdies and a like number of bogeys Sunday en route to notching his second win on the over-50 circuit. His first victory came in September at the Songdo IBD Championship in South Korea. His latest title was worth $440,000.
The biggest winner on Sunday wasn't Blake. Tom Lehman, who entered the final event of the year with a 382-point lead over Calcavecchia, took home the season-long Charles Schwab Cup and a $1 million bonus.
Despite a 1-over 72 and ending up in a tie for 18th at 2-over 286, the 52-year-old from Minnesota managed to edge Calcavecchia by 74 points and earn the huge bonus.
Alone in sixth at 5-under 279 was South African David Frost (72), while tied for seventh another stroke back were Fred Couples (68), Russ Cochran (68), David Eger (69), Kenny Perry (70) and Joey Sindelar (71).
Three players - Tom Pernice, Jr. (69), Olin Browne (71) and Jeff Sluman (71) - shared 12th at 283, while Nick Price and John Huston both had 73s to end up in 15th at 284.
Australia's Peter Senior (68) took 17th at 285, and Bernhard Langer (72) tied Lehman for 18th. Locked in 20th at 3-over 287 were Mark Wiebe (69), John Cook (71) and Canada's Rod Spittle (73).
Rounding out the 30-player field were Chip Beck (70) and Mark O'Meara (69) in 23rd at 5-over 289; Brad Bryant (74) in 25th at 290; Corey Pavin (71), Chien Soon Lu (73) and Hale Irwin (73) in 26th at 291; Tom Watson (74) in 29th at 8-over 282; and Tommy Armour III in last place after a 73.
