Bingham Wins WSGA Senior Men’s Amateur |
|
Dick Bingham of Spokane went wire-to-wire on his home course, Spokane Country Club, with rounds of 66-73-72 to win the 20th WSGA Senior Men’s Amateur Championship.
Bingham put himself in a good position the first round when he carded the low round of the tournament, a 6-under par 66. Even though he shot a 1-over par 73 on the second day, Bingham still maintained a one-stroke lead going into the final round. His even-par 72 on the 6,387-yard, par-72 course was good enough to win the championship by three strokes.
Bingham’s final round included two bogeys that were offset by two birdies; he parred the rest of the holes. His nearest competitor was runner-up Kent Brown of Colville, Wash., who carded back-to-back under-par rounds over the final 36 holes. Brown’s opening round of 4-over-par 76 made it hard to catch Bingham.
Bingham’s win earned him a spot on the Senior Hudson Cup Amateur team that will be played at Waverley Country Club, October 25-27. The Hudson Cup Matches and Senior Hudson Cup Matches are conducted by the Pacific Northwest Section of the PGA of America in cooperation with the Oregon and Washington State Golf associations. The matches are conducted over two days each autumn and pit the region's top professionals and senior professionals against the region's top amateurs and senior amateurs in both team and individual match-play formats.
