Bae Soars at Riviera

South Korea's Sang-Moon Bae followed up his first-round 67 with a 5-under 66 to take over the top spot in the Northern Trust Open. The $6.7 million PGA Tour event is being held at historic Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

After starting with five birdies and a bogey, the 27-year-old Bae posted five birdies Friday. His only dropped shot of the tournament so far has come on the third hole Thursday.

"I love this course," said Bae, whose sole Tour title came last year in the Byron Nelson Championship. He's hoping that affinity helps carry him through the weekend. "I can play well the next two days."

Bae stands at 9-under 133, a stroke ahead of Australia's Aaron Baddeley, who carded a 6-under 65, and Robert Garrigus, who shot his second straight 67. Alone in third at 7-under 135 is Charlie Beljan (68).

Sharing fifth at 136 are Brian Harman (69), William McGirt (67), Jim Furyk (68) and first-round leader Dustin Johnson. Johnson, who started with a 66, shot 70 Friday.

Blake Adams (70), George McNeill (68), South Africa's Charl Schwartzel (68) and Scott Brown (67) were at 137 near the end of the day.

Also at 5-under was Jason Allred, who fired the day's low round, a 7-under-par 64 that could have been even better. The 23-year-old Oregon native posted nine birdies through 14 holes, but from that point forward recorded two bogeys and a like number of pars.

As this story was posted, the tentative cut was even-par 142. Among those assuredly heading home is defending Northern Trust champion John Merrick, who shot rounds of 72 and 73.

After opening with a 7-over 78, former British Open champion Darren Clarke withdrew before the start of the second round with a chest injury. The Northern Irishman joins Scott Verplank and John Peterson on the Northern Trust Open WD list.

By that point at 10-over par, Verplank pulled out after eight holes Thursday, while Peterson, who made it through 17 holes of the first round, didn't return for his final hole Friday morning and was disqualified.
