Badger Mountain Finally Moves Forward


Benton County Commissioners gave the go-ahead for this Kennewick, Washington project in late January 2001. The proposal, which has been on and off the back burner for nearly a decade, includes 638 homes, 239 multi-family units, an 18-hole regulation-length golf course and a nine-hole layout. Additional project aspects include two hotels, a 40-acre commercial district and an RV park.

The developers – Badger Mountain Partners – include Clark & Dill Development and J.A. Groce Private Placement of Tacoma. Groce is still lining up financing for the project’s first phase, which involves the John Steidel-designed 18-hole layout, 100 homes, and 35 of the multi-family units. If financing is arranged and construction begins later this spring, play on the first 18 could commence in Spring 2002. Complete build-out of the 1,707-acre development is expected to take 10 to 12 years and could cost upwards of $200 million.

The development is situated two miles south of Richland and two miles west of Kennewick, near the El Ranch Reata community. Residents in the neighboring cities have mixed sentiments about the project, calling the development a “breach of the Growth Management Act.” The act was established in 1985 to keep certain types of development (such as the houses associated with Badger Mountain) inside existing communities, rather then sprawling in areas apart from city centers. Scott Revell, Kennewick planning manager, expects the development to add an estimated 2,200 new residents to the city.
