Anguiano Leads Sahalee Players Championship
Mark Anguiano of Whittier, Calif., began Day 2 of the 21st Sahalee Players Championship tied for the lead. But on Tuesday the Cal State-Fullerton grad shot a second-consecutive 3-under par 69 to rise to solo first in the international amateur event at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
In hot temperatures that reached the mid-90s, Anguiano was the only player in the final group to put together a solid round; all three of his outings have been under-par.
"This is my first time (at Sahalee). I hit a pretty straight ball in general, so the course fits my game," said Anguiano, who noted he'll turn professional in August and will enter the PGA Tour's Qualifying School this fall.
Anguiano started the day atop the leaderboard at 4-under par with Jay Hwang of Fullerton, Calif., and Byron Meth of San Diego. Meth carded a 2-over par 74, and is now tied for third, while Hwang is tied for ninth after ballooning to a 5-over par 77.
Making the biggest move up the leaderboard is Kurt Kitayama, a senior-to-be at UNLV, who fired a 4-under 68 to rise into second, a stroke behind Anguiano, threatening to turn this a two-horse race in Wednesday's final round.
Joining them in the final group is Corey Pereira, a sophomore-to-be at the University of Washington who eagled the par-5 18th after recording a double-bogey on the par-3 17th.
Of the 68 players in the field only seven have navigated Sahalee's famed tree-lined fairways with under-par rounds.
The comeback story so far is that of Tae Koh of Auckland, New Zealand. After stumbling to a 6-over par 78 in the first round, Koh has stormed back with a 68 and 69 to reach 1-under par, tied for sixth. Through 10 holes in the Monday's opening round he was 8-over par, but in the 44 holes since he's 9-under. "I'm pretty delighted with my comeback so far," said Koh, the reigning Australian Amateur champion.
