45 Universities to Host National Collegiate Golf Championships
Collegiate Golf Alliance (CGA) has announced that 45 universities have been selected to host a local qualifying for the 2007 National Collegiate Golf Championship. This year's NCGC program will offer local qualifiers in 25 different states. Defending student champions from Cal Poly Pomona, alumni divisional champions from University of Southern Mississippi and Faculty/Staff Champions from Western Kentucky will try to defend their titles. USM returns for a fifth year of hosting, as will Pac-10 rivals USC and UCLA and Big 12 powers Texas and Nebraska.
Winning teams from local qualifiers advance to the 6th Annual National Collegiate Golf Championship in Las Vegas on November 9-11, 2007. CGA has teamed with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) to manage the 2007 National Collegiate Golf Championship. A two-person scramble for collegiate and university amateurs, the NCGC allows golfers to compete for their university to see who will be the 2007 national champion. The championship has three divisions: Student, Faculty/Staff and Alumni/Community.
This amateur golf event is focused on university recreational golfers and consists of local qualifying tournaments held across the United States in the summer and fall. Local qualifying winners advance to the official National Collegiate Golf Championship in Las Vegas. The CGA and NIRSA promote and market the event to over 700 colleges and universities. Local qualifying host schools receive a prize package valued at over $500 and over $80 per player. Local qualifying host schools with over 40 players receive a Southwest Airline round-trip ticket to defer travel costs to the National Championship.
Portions of proceeds of the local qualifiers and the championship will benefit the NIRSA Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for students through professional development, research, scholarships, and educational resources. To date, the NCGC program has raised over $19,000 for the foundation. The 2007 NCGC program projects between 2,500 and 3,500 golf participants and over 125 million impressions.
"The NCGC brings together students, faculty and alumni to compete for their university and against other colleges and universities. The level of enthusiasm and involvement over the past few years projects into quite an exciting program for both local qualifiers and a true National Championship," said CGA's president and CEO Mike Munson.
