2009 Palmer Cup to be Held at Cherry Hills

Cherry Hills Country Club in Englewood, Colo., will host the 2009 Palmer Cup. The Ryder Cup-style competition involving top collegians from the United States and Europe will be held June 3-5.

Cherry Hills has been the site of seven USGA competitions and two PGA Championships. The private club, which with Winged Foot and Hazeltine National is the only course to have hosted the U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women's Open, drew fame after the 1960 U.S. Open, when Arnold Palmer shot a final-round 65 to win his only Open title.

"Cherry Hills is very excited to host the 2009 Palmer Cup," said the club's head pro John Ogden. "Arnold Palmer is synonymous with Cherry Hills and naturally we are thrilled to host a tournament of this caliber which bears his name."

"We're extremely honored to be playing the Palmer Cup at such a fine course as Cherry Hills," said GCAA president Mark Crabtree, the head coach at Louisville. "It's always great to be at a venue that has hosted so many championships, but staging the Palmer Cup at the site of Arnold Palmer's 1960 U.S. Open triumph is extra special."

Cherry Hills will play approximately 7,600 yards for the tournament.

University of Washington coach Matt Thurmond will coach the American team. As Washington's head coach since 2001, Thurmond has guided the Huskies to six NCAA Championship appearances in seven years. In 2005 he was named Pac-10 coach of the year.

"To put on a uniform that says U.S.A. and to represent the finest college golfers in our country will be a new thrill and a new level of pride for me," Thurmond said. "As cool as it is to be selected as the coach and to work with our finest college golfers, my main focus is winning the event."

The United States leads the series 6-5-1.
