100th Canadian Open a Start-and-Stop Affair
The first two rounds of the Canadian Open have been marked by several weather delays. Jerry Kelly has adapted the best to the erratic pace of play and is sitting atop the leaderboard at Glen Abbey in Toronto.
The Wisconsin native is 11 under par through 15 holes of his second round, which will be completed Saturday morning. No one has completed the first two rounds.
Because of lengthy delays caused by rain and thunder storms, Kelly completed his first round early Friday. The 42-year-old shot a 65 once all the dust had settled, then went out and began his second round. "I'm striking the ball better than I ever have," Kelly said. "And the putter is coming back again, so I'm ready to go play some golf."
Kevin Na and Camilo Villegas each shot a 9-under 63 to share the first-round lead. Villegas began his second round and was 1-under through 15 holes. The Colombian is tied for second at 10-under with Tim Herron, Martin Laird and Nathan Green. Na was waiting to tee off on his second round before it was halted by lightning.
Kelly carded seven birdies in a nine-hole stretch in his opening 18, then had a bogey and five birdies in the second round before heading to the clubhouse as lightning strikes swept through the area.
The top Canadian was Calgary's Stephen Ames, who opened with a 68. Ames, who's trying to become the first Canadian to win the Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954, spoke for the field when he remarked about the nature of this year's Canadian Open, "It's difficult. Stop, start, stop, start," he said.
